Urinary Tract Infection

UTI's are infections that occur within the urinary system, kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra.  Most occur within the lower part of the tract, bladder and the urethra. 

• Pain with urination

• Frequent urination of small volumes

• Urinary urgency

• Lower abdominal or pelvic pain

Pathogenic microorganisms that have invaded the urinary tract are the cause.  Over 90% of the infections are cause by E. coli that reside in the gastrointestinal tract.

Drops in estrogen prior to menstruation and during menopause.  UTI's are one of the most common infections during pregnancy.

History is an important tool,  urinary frequency and pain has a positive predictive value for 90% of UTI's.

Kidney infection and damage, adverse pregnancy outcomes, urethral narrowing, and sepsis.
